IASTM

What is IASTM?

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) is a therapeutic instrument which helps to perform soft tissue mobilization techniques. IASTM is performed to treat restricted or adhered myofascial tissue. IASTM will effectively treat areas that show soft tissue fibrosis, chronic inflammation, or degeneration.

How does IASTM work?

IASTM breaks down fascial restrictions and scar tissue. The ergonomic design of these instruments provides the therapist with the ability to locate restrictions and allows them to treat the affected area with the appropriate amount of pressure.

The introduction of controlled microtrauma causes the soft tissue structure to begin the stimulation of a local inflammatory response. The microtrauma then reabsorbs the excessive scar tissue with the result of remodeling the affected soft tissue. Specific therapeutic exercises are followed by the IASTM technique to improve proper tissue loading and healing.

Conditions for which IASTM is usually used:

  • Patellar Tendinitis
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Medial/Lateral Epicondylitis
  • Ligament Sprains
  • Acute/Chronic Ankle Sprains
  • Scars
  • Trigger Finger
  • Neck/Back Pain
  • DeQuervain’s Syndrome
  • RSD
  • Heel pain/Achilles Tendonitis
  • Rotator Cuff Tendonitis
